Know Before You Tint
CALIFORNIA TINT LAWS
California has some of the strictest window tinting laws in the country. Here's everything you need to know to stay legal and look good doing it.
WHAT IS VLT?
VLT (Visible Light Transmission) is the percentage of visible light allowed through your window film and glass combined. The lower the percentage, the darker the tint.
CALIFORNIA LEGAL LIMITS
WINDSHIELD
Non-reflective tint only on the top 4 inches
No dark tint is allowed on the windshield below the AS-1 line. Clear UV-blocking film is fine.
FRONT SIDE WINDOWS
Must allow more than 70% VLT
This is the strictest restriction. Most factory glass is already around 70%, so any added film must be very light.
REAR SIDE WINDOWS
Any darkness allowed
Rear passenger windows can be any darkness โ 5% limo tint is perfectly legal here.
REAR WINDOW
Any darkness allowed (with dual side mirrors)
Can be any darkness as long as the vehicle has both left and right side mirrors.
REFLECTIVITY RULES
California law also restricts how reflective your tint can be. Both front and rear windows must not be more reflective than a standard window.
- โ Front side windows: cannot be more than 35% reflective
- โ Rear side windows: cannot be more than 35% reflective
- โ Metallic or mirrored-finish films are generally not allowed
FUN FACTS
Window tint blocks up to 99% of UV rays, reducing your skin cancer risk during daily commutes.
Quality ceramic tint can reduce interior heat by up to 60%, cutting AC usage and improving fuel efficiency.
Ceramic tint contains no metal โ so it won't interfere with GPS, Bluetooth, or cell signals.
California's 70% front window rule is stricter than most states. Texas, for example, allows 25% on front windows.
A first-time tint violation in California is typically an "equipment violation" fix-it ticket โ not a moving violation.
Drivers with a qualifying medical condition (like lupus or skin cancer) can apply for a medical exemption allowing darker front windows.
Ceramic tint uses nano-ceramic particles โ no dyes that fade to purple, no metals that bubble over time.
Window tint film was first developed in the 1960s and became commercially available for cars in the 1970s.
MEDICAL EXEMPTIONS
California allows darker tint on front windows if you have a medical condition that requires it. Conditions that typically qualify include:
- โ Lupus or photosensitivity disorders
- โ Melanoma or other skin cancers
- โ Albinism
- โ Xeroderma pigmentosum
A signed statement from a licensed physician is required. The exemption certificate must be kept in your vehicle at all times.
